My husband has begun work on our chicken coop that is also a chicken tractor so we can move it through the yard to give the chickens more to eat.
As a rule of thumb, it is said that for most chickens you want about 4sq ft of floor space in your coop and 3sq ft of floor space if you have bantam chickens. Perch space should be about 1 foot of space per chicken.
A standard nesting box should be 1ft x 1ft. You want about 1 nest box per 3 laying chickens. Be sure to have a hatch to get into the nesting box so you can thieve eggs without disrupting the chickens and crawling through their coop.
When making a chicken run, each chicken generally needs about 10sq ft of space.
Depending on the number of chickens you have, this may get pretty large!
Here is the beginning of ours. We will have an elevated coop and a nice large run with it.
Can't wait to see the completed coop!
