It's time to start some planting!

There are a few vegetables that need to be started indoors from seed before being transplanted to the ground. A couple of the plants I am going to be starting indoor from seed are tomatoes, broccoli, and peppers. The peppers I will be growing are green and red bell peppers, jalapenos, and red chilies. Many nurseries will have the plants started if you don't want to seed start them yourself, however, you will definitely be paying for it! It's so much cheaper to start them from seeds if you can. These will then be transplanted into the garden at the end of May or beginning of June. These plants will be brittle, so you want to make sure there won't be any more chances of frost or cold temperatures over night. The plants are safer to continue to grow inside until that happens. Your garden as a whole can generally be started and planted mid-May.

Broccoli does not need to be started from seed each year. It can be transplanted into your garden the fall before, generally sometime in October. It will lay dormant during the winter and will begin to grow and produce come spring.

If you are an asparagus lover like my husband and I are, you will want to plant some asparagus roots. Just know that it will take a few years before you really get any produce from it. Unfortunately, you will not get any asparagus spears that first year you plant it. Just be patient. It will continue to grow each year and if maintained well, will produce more and more each year.

Again, be sure to test your soil to know how it might affect your produce. For an example, tomatoes like calcium in the soil, and without enough calcium, they will develop black spots and your plants will not produce as much fruit. You can buy a home soil sampling kit where you buy your seeds/plants from.

Happy planting!!
